This stunning piece is carved out of a single mango tree trunk. Saraswati, the Godesss of creativity, including poetry, dance, yoga, song, and the study of sacred scriptures. Is surrounded by celestial nymphs (apsarases) and her sacred vahana (literally 'vehicle,' or mount), the swan. Her song, played on the vina (ancient Indian lute), is the melody of the Universe, personified as the eternal seed mantra OM.
She holds in her upper right hand japa beads for mantra recitation--her very recitation causes the beauty of sacred speech and poetry to flow through all beings. Her lower left hand holds the Vedas, the most sacred scriptures of ancient India.
Saraswati is the embodiment of grace and creativity in sadhana (yogic practice/discipline).
