Saraswati
A personification of the sacred river Sarasvati, this Goddess, gradually became known in the Puranas as the sacred symbol of Creativity, the Arts, Education, and Music. She is also associated with the Goddess of Speech (Vac). Seated or standing on a lotus, she holds japa (mantra-recitation) beads in her upper right hand, indicating her relationship to sacred sound and to creative expansion through meditation; her lower left hand holds the Vedic Scriptures, as she embodies all spiritual teachings. As she is the consort of Brahma, the creator god, her remaining two hands play the song of universal creation through her stringed vina. Her vehicle (vahana) is a beautiful swan, the most divine bird of the river. Read an ancient story about the Goddess of Creativity.
