| Hanuman, the devoted monkey warrior who served as Rama’s chief support in the latter’s attempt to rescue his wife Sita, has long been recognized as a popular character in India’s most beloved (ancient) epic, the Ramayana. Today he has become one of the most worshipped gods in the Hindu pantheon, enshrined in new, majestic temples, but equally present in poster art and in the mass media. Embodying the profound sentiment of dasya-bhava, the ‘nature of devotion,’ Hanuman, the ‘One with Large Jaws,’ is given the near-impossible task of finding Rama’s beloved wife Sita, who has been taken captive by the megalomaniac demon king Ravana.
