Explore the genius and time-tested ingenuity of Shilpi stone artistry
The mastery of Shilpi sculpting is most often represented in the medium of Gray Kaddappa Marble, which has been quarried locally by them probably since the time of the Pallavan empire. It is presumable that the Shilpis have been working with this elegant soft marble since they were were first employed by the artistically-minded Pallavan Kings. R. Mani, one of the most intuitive, inspired, and talented artists of the community, notes that Gray Kaddappa is his favorite medium for creating the stunningly beautiful, meditative facial countenances for which he is famous. Mani and other renown Shilpi artists are known for their amazing talent to depict exquisite states of facial tranquility that connote deep, meditative transcendence as well as a loving, benificent presence (as seen, for example, in Mani’s Trimurti sculptures.
